MARY
REILLY
Stowe, Vermont
Reilly’s graphite pencil drawings are celebrations of close-ups of nature. For her subject matter, she tries to find and emphasize the beauty in images of nature which are often beyond ones passing glance: seasonal transformation and natures perseverance against time. Reilly generally chooses places that have a tranquil, isolated and slightly mysterious quality to them as well. Reilly’s graphite pencil drawings are rendered through a reductive and additive process. By layering a mid-tone on the papers white surface with up to eight layers of graphite, she develops her image by pushing the darks with pencil and lifting the lights with eraser. Thesubtle shifts in tone produced by her intricate process imbues each piece with a sensual soft-focused photographic quality. Reilly shows her work in New York City and her work is included in museum collections in the U.S. and private collections within the U.S. and Europe. She resides in Stowe, Vermont.
